The oil in a vacuum pump seals the clearances, lubricates the moving parts and carries away heat. The right oil lets the pump reach its rated ultimate pressure and protects it from the gases it pumps. The wrong oil can raise base pressure, break down early or react with the process. Leybold LEYBONOL oils are matched to Leybold pump families and processes. At Provac Sales, we supply LEYBONOL oils and greases and use them in our own repair shop.
LEYBONOL Oils We Carry

PFPE oils are inert and non-flammable, for pumping oxygen, ozone, nitrous oxides, halogens, hydrogen halides and acids.
Diffusion Pump Fluids
- LEYBONOL LVO 500 (DIFFELEN), a mineral white oil and the most common diffusion pump fluid, for DIP, DIJ and LEYBOJET pumps
- LEYBONOL LVO 521, a premium silicone fluid for high and ultra-high vacuum, offered to replace discontinued DC 704 and 705 fluids
- LEYBONOL LVO 540, a hydrocarbon fluid for the LEYBOJET 630 oil vapor booster
Greases
- LEYBONOL LVO 810 (LITHELEN), a mineral oil and lithium soap grease for ground joints, taps and O-rings, usable from 0 to 150°C and down to 10⁻⁸ mbar
- Silicone high vacuum grease for joints, taps and O-rings from -40 to 200°C, down to about 10⁻⁶ mbar

How to Choose the Right LEYBONOL Oil
Start with your pump manual, then match the oil to the process:
- Air, inert gases and water vapor in TRIVAC, E and DK and RUVAC pumps: LVO 100
- Small SOGEVAC pumps: LVO 120. Larger SOGEVAC pumps: LVO 130
- Food and packaging: LVO 140 or LVO 150, depending on SOGEVAC size
- Hot running pumps, solvents and organic vapors: LVO 210
- Heat treatment with soot or tar: LVO 170
- Oxygen, ozone, halogens and strong acids: a PFPE oil such as LVO 400, 410 or 420, in a PFPE-prepared pump only
- Diffusion pumps: LVO 500 for most systems, LVO 521 for silicone service, LVO 540 for the LEYBOJET 630
If you are unsure, send us your pump model and process and we will confirm the grade.
Mineral vs Ester vs PFPE
- Mineral oils cost the least and give low ultimate pressure. They suit clean, non-reactive processes.
- Ester oils, such as LVO 210, resist higher temperatures and organic vapors better, but they are not for inorganic acids, halogens or alkaline media.
- PFPE oils are chemically inert and non-flammable, so they are the safe choice for oxygen and aggressive gases. They cost far more and must only be used in pumps prepared for PFPE.
Never mix oil types. When changing from hydrocarbon to PFPE oil, the pump must be fully cleaned and prepared for PFPE service.
Why Use the OEM Oil?
Leybold pumps are designed and tested with LEYBONOL oils. Using the specified grade keeps the pump at its rated ultimate pressure and protects seals and bearings. On pumps under warranty or service contract, the specified oil is often required.
Oil Change Tips
- Change oil when it turns dark, cloudy or milky, or at the interval in the manual
- Drain the oil while the pump is warm so contaminants drain out with it
- Flush with fresh oil when changing grades or after heavy contamination
- Run gas ballast open when pumping water vapor
- Replace oil mist filters and oil filters with the oil on pumps that use them
- Store oil sealed and indoors to keep out moisture
For harsh processes, an OF 1000 oil filtration system can extend oil life between changes.
Signs Your Pump Oil Needs Changing
- The pump no longer reaches its usual base pressure
- Milky oil, which means water in the oil
- Dark or black oil, which means thermal breakdown or process contamination
- Sludge, foam or particles in the sight glass
- The pump runs hotter or louder than normal
Container Sizes
LEYBONOL oils are offered in several container sizes depending on the grade, from small bottles for lab pumps to larger containers for industrial pumps and bulk users. PFPE oils come in smaller containers because of their cost. Tell us your pump and how many oil changes you run per year, and we will suggest the most economical size.
Leybold Vacuum Fluids and Greases Repair
If fresh oil does not restore performance, the pump may need service. Provac Sales repairs and rebuilds Leybold TRIVAC, SOGEVAC, RUVAC, E and DK, and diffusion pumps. Submit an RMA request and drain the oil before shipping. See our pump repair page for more information.

Leybold Vacuum Fluids and Greases FAQ
1. What oil does a Leybold TRIVAC pump use?
Leybold lists LEYBONOL LVO 100 mineral oil as the standard oil for TRIVAC pumps. LVO 210 ester oil suits hotter duty and organic vapors, and PFPE oil is used in TRIVAC BCS pumps prepared for PFPE.
2. What is the difference between LVO 120 and LVO 130?
Both are mineral oils with additives for SOGEVAC pumps. LVO 120 has lower viscosity for easy starting in SV 25 B and smaller pumps. LVO 130 has higher viscosity for lower pressures in SV 40 B and larger pumps.
3. When should I use PFPE oil like LVO 400?
Use PFPE oil when pumping oxygen, ozone, nitrous oxides, halogens, hydrogen halides or strong acids. It must only be used in pumps prepared for PFPE, and it must not be mixed with hydrocarbon oil.
4. What fluid replaces DC 704 or 705 in a diffusion pump?
Leybold offers LEYBONOL LVO 521, a premium silicone diffusion pump fluid, as a replacement for discontinued DC 704 and 705 fluids.
5. Can I mix different LEYBONOL oils?
No. Different base oils and additives can react or change viscosity. Drain and flush the pump before switching grades, and never mix PFPE with hydrocarbon or ester oil.
