Leybold Rotary Vane Pumps

Rotary vane pumps are the most common roughing and backing pumps in vacuum work. They are compact, reliable and cost-effective, and they reach low pressures with a simple design. Leybold makes two main oil-sealed families: TRIVAC two-stage pumps for deeper vacuum and SOGEVAC single-stage pumps for industrial rough vacuum. At Provac Sales, we supply both, new and rebuilt, and repair and rebuild them in our own shop.

TRIVAC vs SOGEVAC: Two-Stage or Single-Stage?

The biggest decision is how deep a vacuum you need:

  • TRIVAC pumps are two-stage. The D 4 B to D 65 B reach an ultimate total pressure below about 2 x 10⁻³ mbar (1.5 x 10⁻³ Torr) without gas ballast. Choose TRIVAC for laboratory work, freeze drying, backing turbo and diffusion pumps, and leak detectors.
  • SOGEVAC pumps are single-stage. They reach about 0.5 to 1.5 mbar on smaller models, with high pumping speed at rough vacuum and lower cost per m³/h. Choose SOGEVAC for packaging, drying, furnaces, holding and central vacuum.

If your process runs at a few mbar or higher, a SOGEVAC is usually the economical choice. If you need to go below about 0.1 mbar, choose a TRIVAC.

How an Oil-Sealed Rotary Vane Pump Works

An off-center rotor turns inside a cylindrical housing. Vanes slide in slots in the rotor and press against the housing wall, dividing the space into chambers that grow at the inlet and shrink at the exhaust. Oil seals the gaps, lubricates the vanes and carries away heat. In a two-stage pump such as the TRIVAC, two pumping stages run in series for a lower ultimate pressure. Gas ballast lets a small amount of air into the compression stage, which helps the pump handle water vapor without it condensing in the oil.

Key Features

  • Anti-suck-back valve on TRIVAC B and SOGEVAC B and D pumps that keeps oil out of the vacuum system when the pump stops
  • Built-in oil pump on TRIVAC B pumps for reliable lubrication in any operating position
  • Gas ballast for water vapor and condensables
  • Integrated oil mist filters on SOGEVAC pumps, with very clean exhaust
  • Single-phase and three-phase motors on many sizes
  • Special versions such as TRIVAC BCS for PFPE service and explosion-protected TRIVAC D 16 B Ex

Applications

TRIVAC Two-Stage

  • Laboratory and analytical instruments
  • Backing turbo and diffusion pumps
  • Freeze drying and vacuum drying
  • Helium leak detectors
  • Refrigeration evacuation and vacuum distillation
  • Coating and research systems

SOGEVAC Single-Stage

  • Food packaging, including modified atmosphere packaging
  • Vacuum drying and degassing
  • Heat treatment and furnace roughing
  • Holding, lifting, pick and place and woodworking
  • Analytical instruments, using SOGEVAC BI models
  • Central vacuum and medical vacuum

How to Choose the Right Leybold Vane Pump

Before ordering, confirm:

  • Ultimate pressure and working pressure required
  • Pumping speed at your working pressure, in m³/h or CFM
  • Supply voltage, phase and frequency, since speeds differ between 50 and 60 Hz
  • Inlet and exhaust connections, such as KF or ISO
  • Process vapors, including water, solvents and acids
  • Whether you will add a RUVAC blower later for more speed at low pressure

Maintenance Tips

  • Check oil level and color regularly, and change oil when it turns dark or cloudy
  • Run gas ballast open when pumping water vapor, then let the pump run on to purge moisture from the oil
  • Replace oil mist filter elements on SOGEVAC pumps when exhaust mist or back pressure increases
  • Use the oil specified for your pump, such as LEYBONOL LVO 100 for TRIVAC or LVO 120 and LVO 130 for SOGEVAC
  • Keep cooling fins and fans clean
  • Fit an inlet filter on dusty processes

Signs Your Vane Pump Needs Service

  • The pump no longer reaches its usual base pressure
  • Oil turns milky, dark or foamy soon after a change
  • Oil leaks at the shaft seal or around the oil case
  • New noise, rattling or vibration
  • The pump runs hot or trips its motor protection
  • Oil mist at the exhaust on a pump that used to run clean

New vs Rebuilt Leybold Vane Pumps

New pumps suit new installations and applications that need full warranty coverage. Rebuilt pumps, such as rebuilt TRIVAC D 16 B and SOGEVAC SV 100 B units, are a cost-effective way to replace a failed pump of the same model without changing connections or wiring. Rebuilt pumps are cleaned, fitted with new vanes, seals and wear parts as needed, and tested before shipping.

Leybold Vane Pumps Repair

Provac Sales repairs and rebuilds Leybold TRIVAC and SOGEVAC rotary vane pumps. Submit an RMA request, complete the contamination data sheet and drain the oil before shipping. Include the model, serial number and symptoms. See our pump repair page for more information.

Leybold Vane Pumps FAQ

1. What is the difference between Leybold TRIVAC and SOGEVAC pumps?

TRIVAC pumps are two-stage rotary vane pumps that reach below about 2 x 10⁻³ mbar. SOGEVAC pumps are single-stage pumps that reach about 0.5 to 1.5 mbar on smaller models, with high pumping speed and lower cost for industrial rough vacuum.

2. What is the pumping speed of a Leybold TRIVAC D 16 B?

The TRIVAC D 16 B has a pumping speed of about 16.5 m³/h, or 9.7 CFM, at 50 Hz, with a nominal speed of about 18.9 m³/h.

3. What oil does a Leybold SOGEVAC use?

Leybold lists LEYBONOL LVO 120 for SOGEVAC SV 25 B and smaller and LVO 130 for SV 40 B and larger. Food and packaging versions use LVO 140 or LVO 150.

4. Which Leybold vane pump should I use to back a turbo pump?

Use a two-stage TRIVAC, such as a D 4 B to D 16 B, for most turbo pumps. Its lower ultimate pressure keeps the turbo foreline well below its limit.

5. Why is my vane pump oil turning milky?

Milky oil usually means water vapor has condensed in the oil. Run the pump with gas ballast open while pumping vapor, let it run on to purge moisture, and change the oil if it does not clear.
